ABOUT

Competence is our Watchword

Founded in 2022, Watchword Consulting is dedicated to helping service members, veterans, and students attain their goal of a career in national security. Our mission stems from our founder's experience of seeing colleagues leaving the military with a clearance, but never putting it to use in the civilian world.. With this in mind, Watchword was established to provide the guidance and resources necessary to help individuals transition into successful careers in this field.

Our professional services are not limited to those with prior military or intelligence experience, or even those with active security clearances. We believe that anyone with a passion for national security and the drive to succeed can benefit from our services. As Watchword continues to grow, our goal remains the same - to empower individuals to reach their career potential in the national security industry, or in any role that provides a service to the nation's collective defense.

Our Team

Stephen Butka, Founder

Steve started his career in national security in 2007 as a 35P, Cryptolinguist, in the United States Army. Upon leaving service, he became a defense contractor in the northern Virginia area. Steve has experience in a variety of fields, including counterintelligence, counterespionage, technical & human targeting, and cyber security. He sees Watchword as an extension of living the Army Values, and honoring the Non-Commissioned Officer's Creed.

Steve relishes the opportunity to mentor the next generation of professionals in the national security space, and encourages all to reach out and strike up a conversation about the vision he has for Watchword's future.

From the NCO Creed:

Competence is my watch-word. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind – accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a noncommissioned officer, I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership.
